Anthony Grafton

Professor Anthony Grafton is the Henry Putnam University Professor of History and Humanities at Princeton University, whose research focuses on the cultural history of Renaissance Europe, history of books and readers, history of scholarship and education in the West from Antiquity to the 19th century, and the history of science from Antiquity to the Renaissance. In 2011, he served as President of the American Historical Association. After receiving all of his degrees at the University of Chicago, he joined Princeton's History Department in 1975. In addition to teaching, he has written biographies such as those on Leon Battista Alberti, Girolamo Cardano, and Joseph Scaliger. He is a recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship, LA Times Book Prize, Balzan Prize, and Mellon Foundation's Distinguished Achievement Award and a member of the American Philosophical Society and British Academy.
