Anna Grzymala-Busse is a prolific scholar who has written a series of agenda-setting books. Her early work on post-communist transitions in Eastern Europe shaped our understanding of the ways in which historical legacies shape modern state-building through their impact on party systems and state capacity. Her most recent work, on religion and politics is even broader in scope. In it, she explores the enduring influence of religion and religious elites in the context (historical and contemporary) of the construction and consolidation of nation states. Her scholarship has produced a number of highly original insights and set important agendas for other scholars.
