Research focuses on the early evolution of life on Earth. His many paleontological discoveries illuminate the Precambrian history of cyanobacteria and, especially, eukaryotic organisms. Geochemical discoveries have helped to establish the environmental framework of early evolution. In particular, his lab documented remarkable secular variation in the late Precambrian carbon cycle, linking biogeochemical change to tectonics, climate, and ultimately, the emergence of large animals.
