With impact in and beyond academia, Campbell's work has opened new frontiers in the study of the ways in which public policies influence mass political attitudes and behavior--including how Social Security changed the attitudes, voting, and contacting behaviors of elderly U.S. citizens. Further contributions pin down the effects of public programs implemented by private intermediaries such as businesses and nonprofits. In equally agenda-setting work, Campbell is now analyzing divergences in elite and mass attitudes toward various kinds of national and local taxes.
