Career in mathematical fluid dynamics, particularly in thin film flow and higher order partial differential equations and problems of vorticity and incompressible flow. Recent research branches into swarming and cooperative motion and also to spatiotemporal dynamics of human activity, most notably crime dynamics in collaboration with social scientists and the Los Angeles Police Department. Is the youngest woman to be awarded the Society for Applied and Industrial Mathematics' Sonia Kovalevsky Prize (2009).
