Jamal uses a range of methods, including ethnographic research, observational data, and lab and field experiments, to understand reasons for the electoral success of Islamist groups (Middle East), right-wing radical groups (Germany), and gender empowerment in the Arab World. She has found that earned income increases bargaining power of Arab women; that dissemination of gender-friendly interpretations of the Quran (Koran) in Egypt improves attitudes towards women in leadership; in lab experiments in Tunisia, that raising concern about economic loss increases support for political Islam; and that German voters for the far-right AfD are issue-based voters without strong partisan loyalty.
