Research on genetics of bacteria and bacteriophages. He first proposed the correct model for integration of phage genomes into bacterial chromosome and provided supporting genetic evidence. He discovered conditionally lethal mutations in bacteriophage lambda. The genetic control and regulation of biosynthesis of the vitamin biotin were worked out by him and his students. His current research interest include evolution and regulation of bacteriophage insertion systems and comparative genomics.
