Developed techniques for measuring infant and child mortality in the absence of vital statistics; formulated a model for the assessment of demographic consequences of HIV/AIDS. Made contributions on Latin American fertility, mortality, health migration, population aging, and household organization. Oversees data collection on eldely people in seven Latin American countries and in Puerto Rico. President-elect of the Population Association of America.
