Researcg focused on the way living systems construct the substances they require to develop and grow. One of his major efforts was directed to the Pigments of Life, a family of compounds that includes chlorophyll, heme and vitamin B12. He has elucidated the steps by which the macrocycles of these pigments is built and has determined the functions of the enzymes that act in the pathway. His most recent research has concentrated on discovering the way vitamin B12 is constructed in micro-organisms. He is currently Emeritus Professor and continues his work of writing research papers.
