Aaron Victor Cicourel
Aaron V. Cicourel is Professor Emeritus at the Institute for Health and Aging at the University of California, San Francisco. He is also Professor Emeritus of Cognitive Science, Pediatrics, and Sociology at the University of California, San Diego, where he spent most of his career. He is currently a Visiting Scholar at the Institute for the Study of Societal Issues at the University of California, Berkeley. Elected 1992 (III:1). Cicourel has studied the inferential processes that characterize everyday thinking and language use in educational, medical, and scientific settings. He has examined pragmatic aspects of language during individual and distributed problem solving, for example in clinical reasoning. He has made major contributions to sociological methodology, in which he has argued for intense, precise microanalysis, as well as to cognitive science. Cicourel has received honorary doctorates from the University of Fribourg in Switzerland (2007) and the Complutensian University of Madrid in Spain (2008).
