The Officers of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences are deeply saddened by the death of Steve Jobs, who was elected a Fellow of the Academy in 2000. We celebrate his creativity and courage, his extraordinary innovation, and his insight into the importance of making new technology intuitive and easy to use.
The Academy is dedicating the fall 2011 volume of its journal, Daedalus, which examines the future of the Internet, to the pioneering members of the computer industry whose work has transformed our lives in so many ways, and raised fundamental issues for a civil society. Steve Jobs played an important role in making the Internet accessible to people everywhere and his vision forever changed how we work and play.
