Since its 1998 financial collapse, Russia has used its ever-expanding energy resources to reassert its place as a global power. On April 4, 2009, Marshall Goldman, professor of economics emeritus at Wellesley College and scholar of contemporary Russia, gave a talk at the Academy titled, "Putin and the Petrostate."
Goldman addressed how Russia has fared in the last decade under the leadership of current Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, who steered the country through an unprecedented period of economic growth and prosperity. Given the link between Russia's oil production and economic success, Goldman discussed how Russia's energy industry will weather the global recession.Goldman, an internationally recognized authority on Russian economics, politics, and environmental policy, authored Gorbachev's Challenge: Economic Reform in the Age of Technology, The Piratization of the Russian Economy, and most recently, Petrostate: Putin, Power, and the New Russia. He was the Associate Director and currently is a Senior Scholar at Harvard University's Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies.
