On April 14 and 15, an international group of scientists and academics from the United States and Brazil met in at the Academy in Cambridge to discuss the formation of a new institute for collaborative research in the Amazon.
In a day-long session led by Jerrold Meinwald, Goldwin Smith Professor Emeritus at Cornell University and Secretary of the Academy, more than two dozen participants discussed the opportunity for collaborative research on energy, the environment, and biodiversity in the Brazilian rainforest.
Last August, Meinwald, Fellow Koji Nakanishi of Columbia University, and Academy President Emilio Bizzi visited the Brazilian Institute for Advanced Studies in São Paulo. During that trip, they conferred with the Minister for Science and Technology in Brasilia and others about the possibility of establishing a new research center to be affiliated with the Amazonas State University campus in Manaus. This initiative, which has been under discussion for several years, will receive its initial funding from the Brazilian federal government.
