On March 10, Academy CEO Leslie Berlowitz addressed the annual meeting of the National Humanities Alliance (NHA) in Washington, DC.
"In times like these, we look to the humanities to provide us with a sense of common purpose and to renew our sense of the possibilities of citizenship," said Berlowitz. "In short, we look to the humanities as the sources and safeguards of our democratic values."
The NHA's meeting coincides with the annual Humanities Advocacy Day, which is an opportunity for representatives from the humanities community to meet with members of Congress and their staff and convey the importance of federal support for the humanities.
Berlowitz shared data from the recently released Humanities Indicators Prototype with the audience of college and university faculty, teachers, students, museum professionals, librarians, archivists, curators, and independent scholars at an Academy-hosted luncheon. The prototype, based on existing data, is a first-of-its-kind collection of broad-based, quantitative information about areas of concern in the humanities community.Calling the Indicators "a sign of our seriousness as advocates and our renewed commitment to the vitality of the humanities in America," Berlowitz urged the audience to encourage members of Congress to think practically about the future of the nation and to inform them of the Academy's efforts to make the case for the humanities through data.
