US Committee for the International
Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA)
The American Academy serves as one of fifteen national
member organizations (NMOs) for the International Institute for Applied Systems
Analysis, a nongovernmental research institution where international teams of
researchers conduct interdisciplinary studies on environmental, economic,
technological, and social issues in the context of global change. The
Vienna-based organization is a leader in developing innovative models and
carrying out scientific research for use by policy makers, the scientific
community, and the public worldwide.
The focus of IIASA's research is on the dynamics of
selected ecosystems, the atmosphere, water resources, the biosphere, the soil,
and their relationship to humans. Specific concerns are emissions,
transformation, and transport of toxic materials and pollutants; changes in
water resource availability and quality; degradation and remediation of
biological resources; and the causes and effects of land use and land cover
changes. Driving forces of development, such as population, technologies, and
economics are studied both in their own right and because of their impact on
ecosystems.
The fifteen NMOs represent those nations that provide
core funding for IIASA. Since the early 1980s, the Academy has served as the US
NMO, advising IIASA's research and management, through the US Committee for
IIASA, chaired by M. Gordon Wolman (Johns Hopkins University).
